Halloween...
As October 31st rapidly approaches, whether your a child getting ready
for trick or treating or an adult looking for the fright that the
season brings; images of ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and witches surround you.
Ahh yes...
(Al Lewis as Count Dracula/Grandpa Munster)
not to mention the occasional vampire. All of these creatures of the
night have held us for centuries in a powerful spell of awe. From legends, folklore, books, and finally to movies that have mesmerized us through the ages.
The subject I would like to touch on at this time is the vampire. Hmm... maybe
next year for the other above mentioned nasties. The first mentioned of
vampires was 600 BC and since then the legend, myth, story, has done the
snowball effect. From the beginning as a child killer to being a romantic
type of creature as we now see them on TV and read about in books. The
evolution has been a progressive one and seems to be never ending.
(Countess Ersebet (Elizabeth) Bathory B1560-1640 D)
I'm putting together a few facts of the legend and myth of vampires
along with pictures and a brief description of who they are
and what they were. I'll try to go in chronological order but it is
me who is doing the typing, so look over me if you see something amiss.
So boys and girls and children of all ages, be careful and on the lookout
for those blood-drinking creatures of the night this halloween
season. You may never know if it's the wind or your imagination until it's
too late. So, wear your crucifixes and hang your garlic around your
windows because if you don't, this maybe the year you meet one!!
(Vlad Tepes (1428-1477)
Its is speculated that Vlad Tepes (1428-1477) was the inspiration for
Abram Stokers, Dracula which he wrote in 1897. Even if we think he
wasn't the inspiration, we can think of none other than Vlad ruling his
small Romanian county with the zeal and bloodlust as he did. In the
course of history its hard to think of vampires and not summon up images
of Vlad the Impaler.
As history tells us he was a man and nothing more, other than perhaps a
bloodthirsty one. He ran his rule and it was a short rule with blood and
violence. He is thought to have been responsible for 40.000-100.000
deaths of his enemies and fellow countrymen. He was known to dine in the
midst of impaled bodies upon stakes. He once invited all the poor and ill
into his castle for a feast with lots of drink, during the festivities he
asked the people if they would like to be carefree. Of course his
drunken and well fed visitors said yes. So he kept his word and had the
exits and windows boarded up and the castle sat on fire, afterwards he
was to have said he wanted no poor within his kingdom.
For more information,
use a search engine and type in Vlad Tepes, have fun.....
